Doss runs away with Florence Paxton title
It's the second straight year that Doss has won the Florence Paxton, the annual ladies golf tournament sponsored by The Paducah Sun. She is one of 13 golfers to have won the event twice.
"I feel honored to be able to join the list of people who have won the tournament," said Doss. "I really enjoy playing in it and I am happy to win again."
Up three strokes on Murray State junior Sydney Trimble to begin Wednesday's second round, Doss quickly built a comfortable lead between her and the 2013 champion. She made it a 7-stroke lead after just three holes when she birdied her first three, with Trimble shooting 1-over during the early stretch.
Trimble fell behind even more after bogies on six and seven, with Doss birdying the fifth, seventh and ninth holes to give her six birdies on the front nine alone.
The putter was working for Doss, who made the most of her birdie opportunities by finishing her front nine with a 6-under 30 - giving her an 11-stroke lead.
"I putted a lot better today and I hit the ball a lot better," said Doss of the differences between the second round at Country Club of Paducah and the first round at Paxton Park. "I had a little bit of an advantage because this is my home course and I know the greens a little better."
Doss finally bogeyed her first hole on the 10th, but had enough gas in the tank to birdie her final two holes to put an exclamation point on her big win.
"I felt strong most of the day. I struggled a little bit on the back nine but I knew even if I had a couple of bogies, it would still be low enough to be a good round," she said.
Trimble held on to take second place by finishing her second round with a 3-over-par 75. She finished with a two-day score of 148 - 12 strokes better than that of Paige Ellerbusch, the Massac County grad who finished in third place. Teri Doss' twin sister, Charli Doss, shot a 77 on Wednesday to finish in fourth place with a two-day score of 162.
Alisa Weintraub (78-84-162) won the First Flight, Margaret Caksackkar (85-85-171) took the Second Flight and Jen Guy (97-95-192) won the Third Flight. Bailey Flower (90-88-178) won the Juniors Division and Betty McManus (61-59-120) took the Seniors Division to wrap up each of the top finishers.
The victory is a perfect segue for Doss, who will begin her senior year of golf for Paducah Tilghman this Saturday. Doss will head into the season as the defending First Region champion.
"Hopefully I can take this momentum and carry it into the season," Doss said.
