Ross Named 2015 Gilder Lehrman KY History Teacher of the Year

“It is my conviction that it takes one teacher to spark a fire in the heart of a child to birth a life-long learner,” said Ross, who teaches social studies to McNabb fifth-graders.
Ross is a 2008 graduate of Murray State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis in mathematics. He has a Master of Arts in Reading and Writing, with an area in Literacy Specialist.
“Mr. Ross consistently develops lessons that engage his students as they learn history standards,” said McNabb teacher Candice Newbern. “On any given day, students might be participating in a simulation about the Boston Tea Party, singing a song about The Age of Exploration, or creating projects on different Native American cultures.”
“I believe that everything revolves around the student and my classroom, instruction, and relationships will depict that feeling,” said Ross. “This is particularly important in teaching United States history as students continue to build upon the knowledge of previous years.”
Ross has received several awards during his tenure at Murray State University including Vice President of Student Affairs Top Ten Student Leaders, African American Heritage Rising Star Award, and Who’s Who Among American Colleges and Universities. He is a member of the Kentucky Education Association, Kentucky Teacher Internship Program, National Alliance of Black School Educators, Murray State University Elementary Education Advisory Council, Site Based Decision Making Council and Phi Kappa Phi National Honor’s Society.
The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History will present Ross with a $1,000 award, certificate of recognition, and an archive of books and historical resources in his name to McNabb’s library. He will receive an invitation to attend a 2016 Gilder Lehrman Teacher Seminar, and be officially recognized at a state ceremony.
Ross is the second winner from our school district to receive this honor. In 2010, Paducah Tilghman history teacher Ashley Adkins was the recipient of the Gilder Lehrman History Teacher of the Year for Kentucky.
