Ben Bliss, a Paducah Tilghman High School senior, plans to enter the carpentry and construction industry following his time at the Paducah Area Technology Center.
Bliss is this week’s Associated General Contractors of Western Kentucky’s Technical Centers Student of the Week.
When Bliss was in middle school, he said he would visit his grandfather — and watch him build various pieces of furniture. Amazed to see what his grandfather could create with his hands, Bliss’s initial interest in the industry was sparked.
“One day, my granddad and I built a table together,” he said. “I loved the experience of creating something from start to finish, and that was when I knew I wanted to become a carpenter.”
Since then, Bliss has worked toward developing his skills at the Paducah Area Technology Center. He has also worked for Ray Black & Son since June of 2026, gaining hands-on construction experience while continuing his education.
“Working in the field has given me the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals, strengthen my carpentry skills and better understand the expectations of working in the construction industry,” he said.
After graduation, Bliss hopes to become a journeyman carpenter before eventually becoming a master carpenter. He also aims to advance into a project management role and own/operate his own construction business.
“Carpentry is something I can see myself doing for the rest of my life,” he said. “I hope to continue learning and growing until I can one day own a business of my own.”
During his time at the Paducah Area Technology Center, Bliss has been selected as the September 2025 Carpentry Student of the Month and the 2025-2026 Carpentry Student of the Year.
Outside of school and work, Bliss also enjoys reading, drawing and woodworking.
