Calloway County High School was the site of the Class 2A First Region track and field championship, where local schools including Paducah Tilghman High School and Calloway County High School each claimed team championships.
The Lady Lakers claimed the girls’ team title with a staggering score of 239, beating Logan County, who finished second, by 173 points. On the boys’ side of the action, the Blue Tornado won the team championship with 188 points, beating Calloway County by 118 points.
On their way to the team victory, eight first-place finishes and seven second-place finishes for 15 guaranteed spots at the state meet just from the boys team.
Those top finishes include Kylen Ware in the 200 and 400 meter dashes at 22.50 and 50.52 times respectively; the boys relay teams one three of the four events including the 4x100 at 43.65, 4x200 at 1:30.16 and 4x400 at 3:34.06; Justin Watkins won the high jump with a height of 6-4 and Elias McPike won the discus and shot put with throws of 129-5 and 44-6.5 respectively.
Finishing in second place from Tilghman’s boys team includes Tito Crumble in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.43; Charlie Wolfrom placed second in the 3200 meter run at 10:39.20; Josiah Copeland ran a 43.50 in the 300 hurdles; Brayden Wilson took second in the long and triple jumps with jumps of 21-4 and 44-7.75; Ladarius Flemons took second in the discus with a throw of 105-1.5 and Michael Hinton threw 44-5 in the shot put for second place himself.
The Calloway County Lady Lakers claimed a staggering 15 first-place finishes and four second-place finishes.
Hayden Loveless won the 100 and 200 meter dashes with times of 12.30 and 25.94; Jaidan Koch won the 800 and 1600 meter runs with times of 2:29.49 and 5:18.80 and Layla Green won the 100 and 300 meter hurdles with times of 16.02 and 48.51. They won three of the four relay events including the 4x100 at 49.95, 4x200 at 1:45.12 and 4x400 at 4:20.64; Layla Green won the high jump at 5-5; Ann Marie Arnett won the long jump at 17-0 and the triple jump at 35-2; Jilliam Stoval won the pole vault at 8-6; Brylee Barrow won the discus at 106-6 and Keatyn Tynes won the shot put at 33-1.
Their second-place finishes include Brooklyn Smith in the 400 meter dash at 1:04.13; Alec Rodgers took second in the high jump at 5-0; Chloe Sanders took second in the pole vault at 7-0 and Keatyn Tynes threw 104-6.5 in the discus for second.
The Tilghman girls also produced five second-place finishes and the Calloway boys produced a pair of first-place finishes and a pair of second-place finishes.
From the Lady Tornado, Jasline English finished second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.63 and the 200 meter dash at 28.12; they took second in the 4x100 at 52.34 and 4x200 at 1:49.10 and Jaiden Gillespie took second in the shot put at 32-6.5.
For the Lakers, Ashton Robinson won the 800 meters at 1:59.82; the 4x800 meter relay team won with an 8:32.74, while the 4x400 relay team finished second at 3:39.63 and Buxton Harrison took second in the pole vault at 11-6.
Those automatic state championship winners will compete in the state meet in Lexington on Friday, May 30 and after the remaining 2A meets are finished across the state, others from Tilghman and Calloway could make the state meet based on results in each event.
