
More than 1,000 students from across Kentucky gathered in Louisville March 24-27 to demonstrate skills that can help them land high-demand jobs. A total of 98 competitions allowed students to demonstrate their skills in career areas such as manufacturing, transportation, construction, hospitality and human services.
Paducah Area Technical Center students competed at the SkillsUSA State Leadership Conference. Students with top five finishes included:
Will Denkins - T-Shirt Design (Second place)
Landon Perkins- Related Technical Math (Second place)
Owen Schmidt- Job Skill Demonstration A (First place)
Ash Triplett and Jaxon Potter- Debate (Third place)
Gavin Vance- Carpentry 1 (Third Place)
Gavin Vance- Construction Tool Identification (Second Place)
The competitions are run with the help of industry experts, trade associations and labor organizations. Test competencies are set by professional industry standards.

SkillsUSA Kentucky serves more than 3,500 students and instructors each year in middle schools, high schools and postsecondary schools.

9th Street Church of Christ will host their annual ACT prep class for students in grades 8-12 on Saturday April 26 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. The instructor is Mrs. Kelly Walden, co-owner and lead teacher for ACT Prep. On Saturday, March 22nd the Paducah Tilghman High School Chess Team placed 6th in the State Team Chess Championship out of 15 other teams from all over the state!
The team ended up with 2.5 out of 4 team points placing 6th after USAT tie breaks were applied. Second year player and freshman Michael Nelson scored 3 out of 4 individual points, third year player and senior Dawson Black (acting team captain) scored 3 out of 4 individual points, first year player and freshman Aiden Hamilton scored 1.5 out of 4 individual points, and eighth year player and junior Preston Goodyke scored 2 out of 4 individual points. First year players and freshman Bailey Heath scored 1 out of 4 points in the alternates section.

Musalem, President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, and Seema Sheth, Senior Vice President of the Louisville Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, visit the Paducah Innovation Hub for a tour and roundtable discussion with industry partners, community leaders, and secondary and post-secondary educators about workforce gaps and strategies for addressing future workforce needs. Dr. Dennis Dickerson, Professor of History Emeritus at Vanderbilt University, will present "William Stuart Nelson: The Origins of the Nonviolence Movement in the United States" on Saturday, March 29th, at 1:00 PM at the Clemens Fine Arts Center, WKCTC campus. The event is free and open to the public.
Dr. Dickerson will explore Nelson’s pivotal role in the civil rights movement. Nelson, who graduated from Lincoln High School, collaborated with Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to advance nonviolent activism and interfaith unity.
In addition to the Saturday lecture, Dr. Dickerson will meet with Paducah Tilghman and McCracken County High School students, on Friday, offering them a unique chance to engage with a scholar of his caliber.
