Fourteen PTHS Health Science students toured the Baptist Health NICU and Operating Room departments and met with doctors, nurses, and hospital executives as a part of a "Lunch and Learn". During the visit, students learned about the educational and training requirements for various healthcare careers, gained insight into what to expect on the job, and had the opportunity to ask questions directly to hospital staff.
A highlight of the day was when students were able to observe an open-heart surgery in progress, offering a rare and impactful opportunity to see advanced medical procedures firsthand. Students also participated in several interactive activities, including dressing in scrubs, operating a DaVinci surgical robot, and holding a NICU baby simulator used for staff training.
To conclude the experience, the group met with members of the HR department to discuss the application process, professional growth opportunities for employees, and the importance of soft skills during interviews.
It was an unforgettable experience for students- one that deepened their understanding of healthcare professions and reinforced classroom learning through authentic, real-world exposure.
