Dr. Akojie was first appointed to the board in June 2003. He was elected in November 2003 to serve the remaining three years of the unexpired term of the late Bobby Jones.

He served as vice-chair of the board from 2005 - 2008, 2014-2021 . He was elected to serve as vice chair again in 2023.
