Here is the text of the announcement:

The District and Board of Education established a Naming Rights Committee in 2023. Several nominations were received for consideration. The Committee selected Doug Van Fleet and Lyman Brown for our special recognitions this school year.

If you are a Tilghman retiree, parent, alumni, student, or athlete, you have heard of Lyman Brown – If you have ever kept up with high school sports in Kentucky, you’ve heard of Lyman Brown.

Coach Brown and his Paducah Tilghman track and field teams were winners and truly exemplified the Paducah Public Schools well known Tradition of Excellence.

From 1972 through 1990, his Blue Tornado squads captured 14 state track and field titles. During one streak, they won 11 straight championships beginning in 1979. He also had 63 team members win individual state trophies. For this accomplishment, he was named Track Coach of the Decade (1980s) by the Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association… Coach Brown was inducted into the KHSAA Sports Hall of Fame in 1994.

His success was not limited to track. He was also successful as an assistant coach in baseball as Tilghman reached the state finals in 1969. And, as an assistant coach for the football team from 1969-84, he helped Tilghman win two state titles in 1973 and 1980…He also was a successful regional basketball official, working the 1976 and 1993 State Tournaments.

This spring, our Tilghman Track at McRight Field will be dedicated to Coach Brown. We hope to see you at the Lyman Brown PTHS Invitational on April 20th.
